(American Marketing Association) "saluran distribusi sebagai struktur yang merupakan organisasi dalam perusahaan dan luar perusahaan yang terdiri dari agen, dealer, pedagang besar dan pengecer, melalui komoditas, produk atau jasa dipasarkan."

Distribution Management
Developing a strategy is in line with the vision and mission of the company, based on various decisions related to moving the goods physically and non-physically in order to achieve company goals and are in certain environmental conditions and according to the needs and desires of consumers." (Walters, 1977).
Manajemen distribusi adalah sebuah pendekatan yang berorientasi pada keputusan (decision oriented approach) yang berarti bahwa perhatian diarahkan pada pengembangan kebijakan yang efektif mulai dari:
Right Arrow: Kutub konsumen adalah bagaimana konsumen bisa memperoleh produk dengan mudah
Left Arrow: Kutub produsen adalah bagaimana produk tersebut dapat tersebar (spread) secara luas.

Dari kedua titik ini ada titik temunya yakni faktor kedekatan dan kemudahan. Produsen maupun distributor ingin mendekatkan produknya ke konsumen sehingga konsumen merasa mudah untuk mendapatkan produk.

The importance of distribution channels in order to create value
Dalam suatu saturan distribusi, anggota saluran distribusi melaksanakan sejumlah fungsi (Kotler, 2002)
Fungsi adalah pekerjaan/jabatan yang dilaksanakan, tindakan/kegiatan perilaku, atau juga dapat berarti kategori bagi aktivitas-aktivitas (Komarudin, 1994).
The function of distribution channels is the activities of members of the distribution channel to move goods from producers to consumers which in practice can mean the difference (gap) the flow of goods from the principal to the consumer.
Gap                                                                                                                                       :
       Geographical differences in geographical distance gap is caused by differences in production center with customer locations scattered everywhere. So the farther distance raises the role of channeling institutions become increasingly important.
       Time gap is the difference in the distance of time due to a gap of time occurs between production and consumption of produuk-product produced on a large scale. This happens because the purchase and consumption of products arising within a certain time to be more efficient while production is done on an ongoing basis.
       Quantity gap occurs because the production is done on a large scale to obtain the cost per unit lower while consumption happens in smaller quantities.
       Communication and information gap occurs because consumers often do not know the sources of production of products that are needed while the producers do not know who, where potential customers are located.

q  Value form utility is a benefit created by the changes in an attempt to repair an item.
q  Values time utility means that the products are available at any time when needed.
q  Values place utility means that the product will have a higher value on a different place.
q  Value possession utility showed activity that changes the ownership of an item.
